I had always assumed that "bonsai" referred to a specific type of tree that was deliberately cultivated to be small. 

Well, I had assumed incorrectly! 

"Bonsai" is in fact the name of the art form that uses various cultivation techniques to produce small trees that mimic the shape and scale of full-sized trees. 

As I found out, bonsai can be created from early any perennial woody-stemmed tree or shrub species.  Juniper and cedar, especially eastern white cedar, seem to be particularly popular choices ...
